Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in George Town, Penang, Malaysia

Our Lady of Sorrows is one of four Roman Catholic churches in Penang, Malaysia. The church was built in 1888 for the Chinese Catholic community living on the island. As the congregation grew, a new church building was constructed in 1958, giving Our Lady of Sorrows its iconic modern architectural style.

It was a summer monsoon when I ran inside the quiet (and dry!) sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows to escape the thundering rain. The church was cool and dark, and immediately peaceful. I took a seat in a pew and waited for the rain to slack.

Our Lady of Sorrows is an important church in Penang. It's one of the oldest churches on the island, and very important in the prominent Chinese-Malay community in Penang. Our Lady of Sorrows is one of four churches in the City Parish, and home to the parish office.

One particularly special feature is the church's impressive 107-foot bell tower!
